Coinbase-launched Base exploring a new network token

Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/COIN])-started public blockchain, Base, is exploring [https://blog.base.org/the-state-of-base-at-basecamp-2025] the launch of a so-called 'network token'.

Network tokens typically are used to pay for fees associated with making in-app transactions on a blockchain ledger, Bloomberg News [https://blinks.bloomberg.com/news/stories/T2MY11GOYMTD] reported September 15.

"Exploring a network token is one path toward making our vision of a global onchain economy real, and a Base network token has the potential to accelerate Base’s decentralization and expand opportunities for builders and creators across the ecosystem," said the company in a blog post on Monday.

Base said it is in the early phases of its exploration, and doesn't have any specifics to share around timing, design, or governance.

Base began [https://www.base.org/brand] as an internal experiment, mirrored from Coinbase, and has grown into an open canvas for anyone building onchain.
