Nasdaq files proposal seeking permission for trading of tokenized securities - report

Nasdaq (NASDAQ:NDAQ [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NDAQ]) has filed a proposal with the Securities and Exchange Commission, seeking permission for the trading of tokenized securities, Bloomberg News reported [https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-08/nasdaq-seeks-rule-change-with-sec-to-trade-tokenized-stocks], citing the filing seen by the news outlet.

Shares were +0.34% pre-market to $93.80.

The financial exchange reportedly proposes that tokenized stocks should be allowed to trade on its exchange under the same rules as traditional securities, if it's considered equal to and has the same shareholder rights.

Also, Nasdaq proposed that tokenized securities should be clearly labeled as such, the September 8 report noted.

The news comes after a media report [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4488764-stock-exchanges-write-to-regulators-urging-clampdown-on-tokenized-equities---report] on the UK-based World Federation of Exchanges writing to three regulatory bodies, urging a clampdown on the so-called 'tokenized stocks'.

Tokenized equities are blockchain-based tokens created to represent shares in companies, but investors do not become shareholders in the underlying company.

Nasdaq is also said to be seeking approval to amend certain rules, including the definition of a security that allows stocks to be tokenized and traded on regulated venues.

If approved, the move could bring tokenized shares into the system of U.S. regulated exchanges, Bloomberg noted.
