Anthtopic trains models with user chats, extends data retention to five years

Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup backed by tech giants such as Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AMZN]) and Google (GOOG [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOG])(GOOGL [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOGL]), utilizes chat data from users on its Claude Free, Pro and Max plans to train new large language models.

The company announced today it is allowing current users until Sept. 28, 2025, to turn this feature off. New users will pick the setting for model training during the signup process.

"This setting will only apply to new or resumed chats and coding sessions on Claude," Anthropic [https://www.anthropic.com/news/updates-to-our-consumer-terms] said. "Previous chats with no additional activity will not be used for model training."

Anthropic is also extending its data retention period to five years for all users who agree to allow chat data for training and model improvement.

"By participating, you'll help us improve model safety, making our systems for detecting harmful content more accurate and less likely to flag harmless conversations," Anthropic said. "You'll also help future Claude models improve at skills like coding, analysis, and reasoning, ultimately leading to better models for all users."

The new policy does not apply to users under Anthropic's commercial terms, including Claude for Work, Claude Gov, Claude for Education, or API use, including via third parties such as Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud's Vertex AI.

Anthropic is not the only AI company that uses chat data for training models. Google Gemini also stores conversations to train its machine learning systems. This feature can also be turned on and off. Microsoft-backed (MSFT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSFT]) OpenAI's ChatGPT also has this feature, which users can turn off. Meta Platforms (META [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/META]) uses public posts from Facebook and Instagram for training.
