Decentralized token folios, or DTFs, may sound intimidating to mainstream investors, but Reserve believes the concept mirrors a familiar framework.

“A DTF is like an ETF, but in crypto,” said Thomas Mattimore, CEO of ABC Labs, the project building Reserve.

Mattimore added:

“It’s decentralized because it’s on the blockchain. It’s a token folio because it’s a bundle of tokenized assets.”

In practice, the model resembles exchange traded funds (ETFs) that bundle stocks under a trust. ETFs have become one of the most popular investment products in. the world since they were launched over 30 years ago. Reserve has already launched DTFs on its platform that partner with Bloomberg indices in much the same way ETFs rely on Standard & Poor’s benchmarks such as the S&P 500.

Index tracking brings trust to crypto portfolios

Mattimore emphasized that trust comes down to the index being tracked. “There’s two components here. One is what is the index that you’re tracking? And for many years, there’s a variety of different index providers that have become trusted index providers that curate a variety of different investment categories,” he said.

Reserve’s structure aligns more closely with asset managers like Fidelity or Vanguard than with the index publishers themselves. “Reserve DTFs track indices in the same way as ETFs. And so they actually track the Bloomberg index, the Bloomberg Galaxy crypto index or the CoinDesk index for DeFi,” Mattimore noted.

Ratings and rebalancing could set new standards

Mattimore argued that credibility in crypto portfolios comes from consistent execution. “The Reserve platform creates these DTFs that are very accurate on rebalancing, very efficient, and able to track these indices in the same way that you’re used to with an ETF tracking a stock index,” he said.

As crypto attempts to win over pensions, retirement accounts, endowments, and family offices, Reserve is betting that structured products tied to respected benchmarks will prove more durable than speculation.
