New York Times gains on report of activist stake

New York Times (NYSE:NYT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NYT]) edged higher by 0.7% after a report that an activist investor has taken a stake in the newspaper firm.

Fivespan Partners has accumulated a stake in the New York Times (NYSE:NYT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NYT]) and is pressing the newspaper owner to use artificial intelligence to broaden its subscription base, according to a Bloomberg report [https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-26/activist-investor-fivespan-takes-stake-in-new-york-times]on Tuesday, which cited a letter to Fivespan investors. The size of the stake wasn't known. Fivespan has engaged privately with the NYT.

Fivespan believes the New York Times (NYT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NYT]) can use AI to more than double the company's long-term revenue and profit potential, according to the letter.

Fivespan was started last year by Dylan Haggart and Sarah Coyne. The investors also led activist firm ValueAct Capital Management's investment in New York Times before leaving to start Fivespan.

New York Times didn't immediately provide a comment to Bloomberg.
