U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday discussed trade with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, with an agreement to reconvene in the near future.

The two leaders had a "productive and wide-ranging conversation" about "current trade challenges, opportunities, and shared priorities in a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S.," Carney's office said [https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/readouts/2025/08/21/prime-minister-carney-speaks-president-united-states-donald-j-trump]in a statement, without providing details.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Seeking Alpha.

At the end of July, Trump signed [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4476218-trump-follows-through-on-35-percent-tariff-plan-for-canada] an order boosting the tariff on Canada to 35% from 25%. No major new developments have emerged since then, as talks remain ongoing.
