The University of Michigan's Consumer Survey Center questions households each month on their assessment of current conditions and expectations of future conditions.

The first reading for October is expected to show another decline to 54.0 from 55.1 in September and 58.2 in August as consumers fret over rising prices and weakening employment prospects.

The Baker Hughes North American rig count tracks weekly changes in the number of active operating oil & gas rigs.

St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President Alberto Musalem will speak on the U.S. economy and monetary policy in fireside chat before the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Speaker's Series.

2:00 PM TREASURY STATEMENT

The U.S. Treasury releases a monthly account of the surplus or deficit of the federal government. Changes in the budget balance reflect federal policy on spending and taxation. The government's fiscal year begins in October.
