Stellantis tracks back Jeep production in Ontario after massive $13 billion U.S. investment plan

Stellantis (NYSE:STLA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/STLA]) said that it will halt its plan to produce the Jeep Compass SUV at its Brampton Assembly Plant in the Toronto region and instead shift production to Belvidere, Illinois, as part of a major $13 billion investment to expand U.S. manufacturing capacity [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4504100-stellantis-shares-jolted-higher-by-13b-investment-in-us-manufacturing].

"Stellantis cannot be allowed to renege on its commitments to Canadian workers, and governments cannot stand by while our jobs are shifted to the United States," said Unifor National President Lana Payne in a statement, according to CNC News.

The carmaker said that it will invest $13 billion U.S. over the next four years to expand its manufacturing capacity in the U.S. The company added that its Jeep Compass, previously slated to be made at the Brampton Assembly Plant, will move to the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the decision a "direct consequence of current U.S. tariffs and potential future U.S. trade actions," adding that Ottawa and Unifor will protect workers and identify new investment opportunities.

Stellantis (NYSE:STLA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/STLA]) stock price gained ~5% on Wednesday during pre-market hours of trading.
