U.S. judge blocks Trump administration from firing workers during shutdown for now

A U.S. district judge has blocked the Trump administration from laying off thousands of federal workers during the government shutdown for now, multiple media reports said on Wednesday.

The ruling from District Judge Susan Illston comes after the government sent layoff notices to more than 4,100 federal employees last week. Earlier today, Russ Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, said the firings could go much higher than that figure.

The government shutdown entered its fifteenth day on Wednesday. Prediction market Kalshi sees the shutdown lasting 37.2 days, which would make it the longest in history.

The shutdown derailed the publication of the September nonfarm payrolls report earlier this month.
