OpenAI’s new Sora app tops App Store

OpenAI’s newly launched app Sora has secured the top spot in Apple’s App Store ahead of Google’s (GOOG [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GOOG]) Gemini and the Microsoft-backed (NASDAQ:MSFT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSFT]) startup’s own ChatGPT.

The video editing and creation app, which was launched [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4500299-openai-unveils-release-of-new-sora-video-editing-app] on Tuesday, is powered by OpenAI's Sora 2 video generation model, which lets users input text, image and video to create video.

Despite being invite-only for now and limited to users in the U.S. and Canada, Sora reportedly saw 56,000 downloads on its first day on the U.S. App Store.

“It’s been epic to see what the collective creativity of humanity is capable of so far,” Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, wrote in a post [https://x.com/billpeeb] on X on Friday. “Team is iterating fast and listening to feedback.”

ChatGPT Pro users will be able to access the company's higher quality Sora 2 Pro model on sora.com and soon in the Sora app. There will also be a Sora 2 API coming, OpenAI said, adding that it plans to quickly expand the app to additional countries.
