Hong Kong retail sales have fallen for the tenth month in a row, signaling continued difficulties for the region’s retail sector. The Census and Statistics Department reported the value of total retail sales in November decreased by 8.5% compared to the same period last year.
This decline, though significant, is a slight improvement from October’s revised drop of 9.3%. However, it underscores the persistent challenges faced by retailers in Hong Kong, who are grappling with factors such as decreased tourism and changing consumer spending habits.
Specific categories experiencing notable declines include:
- Jewellery, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts
- Apparel
- Medicines and cosmetic
The Hong Kong government has acknowledged the challenging retail environment and is monitoring the situation closely. They have indicated that external economic uncertainties and shifts in tourism patterns are contributing factors to the ongoing decline.
