[Ukrainian And Russian Peace Talks]
Ukraine's leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Saturday said he would see U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday and that he and European leaders supported a trilateral meeting between him, Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelenskyy's comments come after Trump and Putin gathered in Alaska on Friday, a meeting that Trump described as "very productive," even though no agreement [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4486288-trump-says-putin-meeting-very-productive-but-no-deal-reached] was reached to resolve a war that has raged for nearly three and a half years.
"Ukraine reaffirms its readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace. President Trump informed about his meeting with the Russian leader and the main points of their discussion. It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation," Zelenskyy said on X (formerly Twitter).
"We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia. Ukraine emphasizes that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this," Ukraine's President said.
"On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation," he added.
Trump in the lead-up to Alaska had downplayed expectations on reaching a deal to end the war and stressed that the more important meeting would be the one between him, Putin, and Zelenskyy.
"As President Trump said ‘there's no deal until there's a deal'. As envisioned by President Trump, the next step must now be further talks including President Zelenskyy, whom he will meet soon. We are also ready to work with President Trump and President Zelenskyy towards a trilateral summit with European support," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and European Council President António Costa said in a joint statement on Friday.
Media reports earlier this month said that a possible deal to end the war could involve swapping of territories or of Russia locking in territories already captured. Zelenskyy has rejected any such notions.
"We are clear that Ukraine must have ironclad security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," the European leaders said. "It will be up to Ukraine to make decisions on its territory. International borders must not be changed by force," they added.
Hopes of progress on Russia and Ukraine helped Wall Street post solid gains on Friday. Meanwhile, WTI crude oil futures (CL1:COM [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/CL1:COM]) ended the week -0.3% lower.
