Northern Dynasty still no closer to winning approval for controversial Alaska mine

Northern Dynasty Minerals (NYSE:NAK [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NAK]) has not advanced an “updated submission” for its proposed Pebble mine in Alaska, with "nothing currently before the agency to that effect," the Environmental Protection Agency said in a status update posted this week, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

The absence of an updated proposal comes even after government officials advised the company that changes to the project could cause the Trump administration to look more favorably on the controversial mine, according to the report [https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2025/aug/26/alaskan-mine-project-sticks-to-proposal-in-battle-/].

Northern Dynasty (NYSE:NAK [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NAK]) shares rallied earlier this year on bets that a new Trump administration might clear a path for the Pebble project to proceed, but have plunged more than 60% since disclosing last month [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4468923-northern-dynasty-sinks-again-as-alaska-mine-settlement-hopes-fade] that it had not made progress in talks with the Environmental Protection Agency to end a Biden-era veto on the project.

At the time, the company filed a motion in Federal District Court in Alaska seeking a schedule for briefings in its push for summary judgment to resolve the case.

Northern Dynasty (NAK [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NAK]) has touted Pebble as the world's largest undeveloped copper-gold resource, but its plans have been criticized even by Donald Trump Jr., as well as environmentalists worried about salmon fishing at nearby Bristol Bay.
