* Copper surged toward its key threshold of $10,000 a ton on the London Metal Exchange on Monday, after advancing last month on a weaker dollar.
* The metal gained 3% in August and rose as much as 0.3% to $9,928 a ton on Monday.
* Copper futures on the London Metal Exchange registered a fourth straight weekly gain after edging up to nearly the highest in a month last week, as positive economic data from the U.S. and China lifted the demand outlook.
