Gold pauses after record close; silver hits 13-year high

Gold (XAUUSD:CUR [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/XAUUSD:CUR]) futures slipped Thursday, pulling back slightly after setting a record close in the previous session, while silver extended its rally to the highest level in more than a decade.

Front-month Comex gold for September delivery settled at $3,636.90 an ounce, down 0.2% or $6.70. The dip ended a four-day winning streak, though prices remain near historic highs — just below Wednesday’s peak of $3,643.60, the highest on record.

Gold is still up more than 38% year-to-date and more than 42% compared with a year ago. Despite Thursday’s decline, bullion has climbed nearly 5% this month alone.

Silver (XAGUSD:CUR [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/XAGUSD:CUR]) outperformed, with September futures jumping 1.4% to $41.70 an ounce, the strongest close since 2011. The metal has gained more than 44% this year and is up for nine of the past 11 sessions.
