Macau casino stocks are on watch as Golden Week approaches

Investors in the Macau casino sector have a key catalyst coming up. Macau Golden Week will run from October 1 to October 8, coinciding with China’s National Day holiday and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Expectations for visitor numbers and tourism impact are high, with authorities and analysts predicting record arrivals and significant boosts in tourism and gaming revenue for Macau during this period. Following strong tourism marks in the summer, Macau is anticipating a surge in Golden Week arrivals, potentially hitting record levels.

Relaxed travel policies and pent-up post-pandemic demand from mainland China and Hong Kong are seen as the two biggest drivers of Golden Week traffic, despite some concerns about the strength of the Chinese economy.

Heading into the holiday period, Jefferies analyst Anne Ling said the firm remains compelled by the double-digit growth trajectory in Macau, which is expected to drive a modestly positive reaction. "From a stock perspective, WYNN should continue to outperform given the strength of business broadly, we expect LVS/SCL to recover on its strategic adjustment in Macau, Galaxy remains a top pick from HK side," previewed Ling.
