BHP commits $555 million to boost copper projects at Olympic Dam, Australia

Mining giant BHP (NYSE:BHP [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BHP]) to invest over A$840 million ($555 million) in its Olympic Dam copper operations in South Australia.

Olympic Dam is a project that holds a large deposit of gold, copper, and uranium and is one of BHP’s (NYSE:BHP [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BHP]) three copper-growth projects.

Over the last three years, the project has consistently produced over 300,000 tons of copper per year.

“BHP is the largest producer of copper in the world, and we expect to grow our copper base from 1.7 million tonnes to around 2.5 million tonnes per annum. Achieving that scale requires significant copper growth, and we are fortunate to have a world-class copper province right here in South Australia to do just that,” said [https://www.bhp.com/news/articles/2025/10/bhp-investing-to-boost-olympic-dam-operations] Edgar Basto, COO, BHP.

The investment targets upgrades such as a new underground access tunnel, advanced backfill system, expanded ore pass capacity, and the construction of a new oxygen facility to debottleneck and improve copper smelting productivity.

The company stated that the investment will create 200 construction jobs and reinforce South Australia's status as a global copper supplier.
