U.S., Japan deepen critical minerals pact as Trump sets 15% tariffs on Japanese exports

The U.S. and Japan have signed a deal to strengthen collaboration on critical minerals, advancing Washington’s effort to curb dependence on China.

The trade agreement signed by President Donald Trump and Japan’s first female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, in Tokyo, promises a "new golden age" for bilateral ties.

The governments will work together to “support the supply of raw and processed critical minerals and rare earths crucial to the domestic industries of the United States and Japan,” according to the text of a framework agreement signed by the two leaders.

Furthermore, Japanese exports to the U.S. will now face 15% tariffs, which was agreed previously but only finalized on Tuesday.

Trump hailed the US’s alliance with Japan, reaffirming ties with a longstanding partner and praising Takaichi on her plans to ratchet up defense spending.

“I want to just let you know anytime you have any question, any doubt, anything you want, any favors you need, anything I can do to help Japan, we will be there,” Trump said. “We are an ally at the strongest level.”
