Rare earth stocks rise following Trump–Xi deal, China pauses planned export curbs for a year

China has paused its plans to significantly expand rare-earth export controls, easing pressure on global buyers.

Export controls announced on Oct. 9 will be suspended for one year, China’s Ministry of Commerce said in a statement Thursday on its website, after Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping agreed to a trade truce at a meeting in Seoul.

In premarket activity, MP Materials (MP [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MP]) +2.6%, USA Rare Earth (USAR [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/USAR]) +3%, TMC (TMC [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/TMC]) 2.5%, Critical Metals (CRML [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/CRML]) 6.7%, and Energy Fuels (UUUU [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/UUUU]) +3.8%.

“The narrative around Chinese control of resources won’t change just because the export controls are delayed by a year,” David S. Abraham, a professor at Idaho’s Boise State University and an expert in rare earths, told _Bloomberg News_.

“What this does is buy more time” for the industry and officials outside China to develop a response, he said.

The one-year pause agreed to by Beijing covers a wide range of proposed steps unveiled earlier this month as Trump and Xi sought to pile pressure on each other in the run-up to trade negotiations.

Elsewhere, the Group of Seven nations are set to announce plans on Friday for an alliance on critical minerals supply aimed at challenging China’s dominance.
