Strategy posts $3.9B bitcoin paper profit in Q3; no new buys this week

Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSTR]) disclosed Monday a $3.89B unrealized gain on its bitcoin (BTC-USD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BTC-USD]) treasury for the third quarter of the year, during which BTC climbed [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BTC-USD/charting] 9% to record territory.

For the three-month period ended Sept. 30, MSTR's paper profit came with a $1.12B associated deferred tax expense.

The company had a digital asset carrying a value of $73.2B, with a related deferred tax liability of $7.43B at Sept. 30.

The Michael Saylor-founded company also noted it did not buy [https://seekingalpha.com/filing/10497787] more BTC during the Sept. 29 - Oct. 5 period, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing. That marks Strategy's (NASDAQ:MSTR [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSTR]) first weekly pause since April.

Its total holdings remained unchanged at about 640K tokens, which have an average purchase price of $73,983 apiece. BTC was hovering around $125K at the time of writing, leaving Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSTR]) more than $31B in the green.

MSTR shares advanced 3% in premarket trading, coinciding with bitcoin's (BTC-USD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BTC-USD]) late weekend bull run [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4501852-bitcoin-tops-125000-for-first-time] to new highs.
