UBS, Swiss government could compromise on capital requirements - report

UBS Group (NYSE:UBS [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/UBS]) and the Swiss government were privately moving toward a compromise on tough new capital rules, according to a media report published Monday.

The news raises the propsect that lawmakers will settle on a lower requirement that eases the bank's ~$25B capital burden [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4456247-ubs-faces-26b-capital-hike-under-new-swiss-rule] while still addressing safety concerns after Credit Suisse's collapse two years ao.

The additional capital burden could be revised down to somewhere around $15B, Reuters reported, citing one person familiar with the government's thinking. UBS (NYSE:UBS [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/UBS]) can tolerate that amount, two other people familiar with the bank's thinking said added.

The process still has a long road ahead, though, and nothing has been decided, the article said [https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/switzerland-ubs-could-compromise-capital-rules-sources-say-2025-09-29/], noting that it was unclear whether UBS (UBS [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/UBS]) and the government had talked about possible concessions.

UBS shares gained 1.2% in midafternoon trading.
