July PPI, Deere earnings, initial jobless claims: What to Watch

Market Domination Overtime host Josh Lipton takes a look at the top stories for investors to watch on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) for the month of July. Economists are expecting a slight uptick in PPI from the prior month.

In the morning, Deere & Company (DE), JD.com (JD), Tapestry (TPR), and Birkenstock (BIRK) will report earnings. Applied Materials (AMAT) will deliver third quarter results in the afternoon, with analysts anticipating sales growth.

Initial jobless claims for the week ending Aug. 9 will be released in the morning. Economists expect a slight decrease from the previous week.

Time now for to watch Thursday, August 14th. I start off on the economy. I'm getting some fresh inflation data on Thursday with PPI. That's the producer price index. Economists forecasting total and core PPI to increase to 0.2% on a month-over-month basis suggesting that prices producers receive for goods and services rose potentially signaling some increased inflationary pressure building at the wholesale level. And taking a look at earnings, some more reports coming in on Thursday, including John Deere, Tapestry, and Applied Materials. Applied Materials announced results for the third quarter after the market's closed and is expecting the company's sales to get a boost in Q3, driven by strong demand for its chip-making equipment and stabilizing sales in China. I'm moving over to the labor force. We're going to be getting some fresh data with initial jobless claims. Economists anticipating claims to decrease to 225,000 compared to the previous week, meaning fewer people filed for unemployment benefits and signaling a slight tightening in the labor market.
