China has urged Mexico to think twice before raising tariffs to as high as 50% on Asia-made cars and other goods, warning that the move would be seen as "appeasement and compromise of unilateral bullying."

"The interests of third parties must not be sacrificed due to coercion," a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce told reporters, pointing to "the U.S.'s abuse of tariffs."

The spokesperson warned that Mexico's tariff hike will undermine the certainty of its business environment and reduce corporate confidence in investing in the Central American nation.

"We do not want to see our economic and trade cooperation affected by this. We urge Mexico to exercise extreme caution and think twice before acting," the spokesperson said [https://www.mofcom.gov.cn/xwfb/xwfyrth/art/2025/art_e6fa3d4bfa6b48c8b49ccfc833a330f2.html], adding that China will take necessary measures to "resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests."

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the tariff hike [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4493949-mexico-plans-to-slap-50-tariff-on-chinese-cars-as-it-faces-trumps-pressure] was intended to boost the domestic economy, and not to appease the U.S. "What we want to is to be able to discuss things without the need to generate any conflict," she told reporters on Thursday.
