Finnish materials technology company Betolar and limestone company Nordkalk have started a joint research project to explore new uses for circular calcite.
Circular calcite is a byproduct derived from flotation tailings at Nordkalk’s Lappeenranta site in Finland.
The agreement sets out plans for a potential long-term partnership focused on commercialising circular calcite for applications in construction or mining, pending technical validation and market evaluation.
Betolar president and CEO Tuija Kalpala said: “Our collaboration reflects a strong commitment to building partnerships that create value for both parties and promote circular economy - particularly in relation to underutilised materials.”
The project will proceed in two phases.
In the pre-commercial phase, Betolar will use its SidePrime analysis service to assess the material’s binder properties.
Based on this assessment, Betolar will design a solution for Nordkalk that aims to use the tailings in making concrete additives, aggregates, binder materials, geopolymer concrete, or other similar products.
This phase is anticipated to finish by the end of 2025.
If results from the pre-commercial phase meet expectations, both companies plan to move forward with the commercialisation of circular calcite and establish a long-term collaboration.
Nordkalk Nordics commercial EVP Mikael Furu said: “Nordkalk is determined to utilise 100% of its mined minerals and cooperation with Betolar is a very important step to reach this at our Lappeenranta site.
"Many of mining industry tailings will become valuable future sources of minerals but need new technologies, determination and open minds in creation process. By joining forces in this particular project, we intend to create interesting new products and raw material for the local construction industry.”
