Payroll services company ADP Research (NASDAQ:ADP [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ADP]) stopped providing data on private-sector employment to the Federal Reserve, adding to the lack of economic data that has resulted from the three-week-old government shutdown, according to a media report.
The Federal Reserve uses private economic data to complement the U.S. government's reports, which Fed Chair Jerome Powell has described as the "gold standard" of economic data. Labor market data is crucial for the central bank to discern how well it's doing in achieving its dual mandate of full employment and price stability.
The reason for the cut-off wasn't immediately clear, and ADP and the Fed declined to comment to _The American Prospect,_ which first reported [https://prospect.org/2025/10/21/fed-making-key-economic-decisions-without-data/]the news.
Fed Governor Christopher Waller disclosed in a speech [https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/speech/waller20250828a.htm]that the Fed collaborates with ADP to construct a weekly payroll employment measure that covers ~20% of the U.S.'s private workforce. Sources told _The_ _American Prospect_ that ADP wasn't happy with the slip.
With the government shutdown dragging on, the September Employment Situation Report, which includes the closely watch nonfarm payrolls number and the unemployment rate, haven't been issued by the U.S. Department of Labor.
