Boeing (NYSE:BA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BA]) appointed Landon Loomis as its new president for China, selecting a fluent Mandarin speaker with both aviation and government experience to help navigate a turbulent period in U.S.-China trade relations.
Loomis, who previously worked at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing as an aviation specialist and later served as a special adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence, will also retain his role as Boeing’s (NYSE:BA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BA]) vice president of global policy. Based in Beijing, he will oversee the company’s operations, strategic planning, and engagement with Chinese authorities.
The leadership change comes amid renewed tensions between Washington and Beijing, with Boeing (BA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BA]) caught in the middle of tariff disputes and export restrictions. Earlier this year, China temporarily paused deliveries of new Boeing (BA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BA]) aircraft before resuming them. U.S. officials have also hinted that exports of aircraft parts to China could face future restrictions.
“Landon is the ideal leader for Boeing China,” said Brendan Nelson, president of Boeing Global. “His deep industry and government experience, combined with years of living and working in China, will further strengthen our long-term partnerships and presence here.”
Boeing (BA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BA]) is said to be in talks to sell as many as 500 planes to Chinese airlines, a potential lifeline for the manufacturer, dependent on improved political and trade conditions. Meanwhile, rival Airbus (OTCPK:EADSF [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/EADSF]) (OTCPK:EADSY [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/EADSY]) expanded its footprint in China this week by launching a second A320neo assembly line in Tianjin, intensifying competition in one of the world’s most important aviation markets.
