Trump says he won’t resume Canada trade talks ‘for a while’ amid Reagan ad row

U.S. President Donald Trump said he doesn’t plan to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney “for a while,” continuing to voice displeasure over an Ontario TV ad criticizing his tariff policies.

“I don’t want to meet with him,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday. “No, I’m not going to be meeting with them for a while. I’m very happy with the deal we have right now with Canada. We’re going to let it ride.”

Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian goods by 10% in response to the ad, which featured remarks by former President Ronald Reagan opposing tariffs. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has since said the ad would stop airing, but Trump remains frustrated that it wasn’t pulled immediately.

Asked when the new tariff would take effect, Trump said, “We’ll see.”

Canada currently faces a 35% base U.S. tariff rate, largely offset by exemptions under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Trump hasn’t said whether the planned hike would affect those exemptions.

He also dismissed claims that the federal government wasn’t behind the ad, saying, “The prime minister knew — everybody knew.”

Carney, speaking in Malaysia, offered a muted response: “Canada stands ready to build on the progress that we had been making in our negotiations or discussions with our American counterparts.”
