U.S. economic growth could turn negative in the fourth quarter if the federal government shutdown continues, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said Sunday.
In an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Hassett pointed to a shortage of air traffic controllers as one example of how the shutdown is disrupting daily activity, particularly as Americans prepare for the Thanksgiving travel rush.
“Thanksgiving time is one of the hottest times of the year for the economy,” he said, noting that if travel and related spending slow during the busy holiday period, “we really could be looking at a negative quarter for the fourth quarter.”
