Argentine midterms: Milei's party wins big as voters back his economic overhaul

Argentine President Javier Milei's party scored huge wins in the midterm legislative elections, as voters backed the leader's overhaul of the economy through austerity measures and free market reforms.

Sunday's elections were for half of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies and one-third of the Senate seats. Milei's party La Libertad Avanza scored about 41% of votes, while the left-leaning opposition Peronist coalition secured around 31%.

"Starting from December 10, we will go from 37 to 101 deputies and from 6 to 20 senators," Milei declared following the results. "We will have the most reformist Congress in Argentine history."

"He is doing a wonderful job! Our confidence in him was justified by the People of Argentina," Trump posted on Truth Social.

The victory "should give [Milei's] administration a fresh endowment of legitimacy and political capital which, if well used to build strong and reliable alliances, should strengthen governability," Alberto Ramos, head of LatAm economics at Goldman Sachs, told [https://www.wsj.com/world/americas/milei-wins-mandate-for-free-market-revolution-in-argentinas-election-3be65f38] _The Wall Street Journal_. "That also bodes well for the continuation of strong U.S. financial support."
