SoftBank unit Graphcore to invest up to £1B in India for AI computing

SoftBank's (OTCPK:SFTBY [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SFTBY]) (OTCPK:SFTBF [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SFTBF]) unit Graphcore said it will invest up to £1B over the next decade in India.

The company is opening [https://www.graphcore.ai/posts/graphcore-to-invest-1bn-in-india-creating-500-semiconductor-jobs] a new AI Engineering Campus in Bengaluru, creating 500 new semiconductor jobs, with an investment of up to £1B over the next 10 years.

The company noted that the AI Engineering Campus will play a central role in Graphcore’s work, building the future of AI computing, helping to realize SoftBank's vision of becoming the leading Artificial Super Intelligence platform provider.

The company said it will immediately start to hire the first 100 AI semiconductor engineering roles in India, including Silicon Logical Design, Physical Design, Verification, Characterization and Bring-up.

Graphcore's presence in India is made possible by the ongoing investment of SoftBank Group into the company. That is expected to reach £1B per year, in the next couple of years — and will also see a doubling in Graphcore's headcount in the U.K. to around 750 people, hiring mainly highly skilled silicon engineering, software and AI engineering roles.

SoftBank Group has invested over $12B in India over the past decade, Graphcore noted.
