China said that Vice Premier He Lifeng will meet with U.S. officials in Kuala Lumpur from October 24 to 27 for a new round of trade negotiations, as both sides seek to ease escalating tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

The talks will be held in the Malaysian capital, the Commerce Ministry said in a Thursday statement, and follow a call last week between He—Beijing’s top trade negotiator and a close ally of President Xi Jinping—and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, during which both sides discussed ways to stabilize trade and investment ties.

The meetings come at a critical juncture, with a temporary trade truce set to expire on November 10 unless extended. The outcome could also influence an expected meeting between Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump later this month on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.

Tensions have flared in recent weeks after Washington expanded technology restrictions and proposed tariffs on Chinese vessels entering U.S. ports. In response, Beijing announced tighter export controls on rare earths and other critical materials, prompting concerns about global supply chain disruptions. Earlier this month, Trump also threatened to impose “sky-high” tariffs on Chinese imports and even hinted at canceling his planned meeting with Xi.

To calm business concerns, China’s Commerce Ministry convened a large meeting with foreign firms in Beijing earlier this week, assuring them that the new export measures were not intended to curtail normal trade.
