Microsoft (MSFT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSFT]) announced late on Wednesday that it had resolved an outage of its Azure cloud platform, which had impacted the company's suite of productivity software and a wide range of global businesses.
"While error rates and latency are back to pre-incident levels, a small number of customers may still be seeing issues, and we are still working to mitigate this long tail," Microsoft Azure said, adding that the incident lasted for over 8 hours.
Microsoft said some users of Microsoft 365 [https://status.cloud.microsoft/] saw delays with Outlook among other services, but by 21:00GMT, many websites that went down were once again accessible after the company restored a prior update.
The company's Azure cloud computing platform, which underpins large parts of the internet, had reported a "degradation of some services" at 16:00 GMT.
Alaska Airlines (ALK [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ALK]) reported earlier in the day that a Microsoft Azure outage had disrupted key systems, including its website, though it began restoring services once the issue was resolved.
Similarly, London’s Heathrow Airport website was back online after experiencing related issues, and Vodafone (VOD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/VOD]) also faced disruptions due to the outage.
"An inadvertent tenant configuration change within Azure Front Door triggered a widespread service disruption affecting both Microsoft services and customer applications dependent on AFD for global content delivery," the company said.
"The change introduced an invalid or inconsistent configuration state that caused a significant number of AFD nodes to fail to load properly, leading to increased latencies, timeouts, and connection errors for downstream services."
The Microsoft (MSFT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MSFT]) outage follows last week's disruption at Amazon (AMZN [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AMZN]) AWS, which caused global turmoil among thousands of websites.
