Asian indexes mixed after S&P 500 touches another all-time high

Asian indexes were mixed on Thursday after the S&P 500 in the U.S. hit another all-time high. Gold dipped to trade around $3,380 per ounce on Thursday, hovering close to a two-week high as investors await fresh policy signals ahead of Friday’s PCE price index.

Japan (NKY:IND [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NKY:IND]) gained 0.69% as Japan's central bank said it will continue raising interest rates if its outlook for economic activity and prices is realized. Japan’s 10-year government bond yield held around 1.62%, hovering near a 17-year peak hit earlier this week.

China (SHCOMP [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SHCOMP]) fell 0.08%. The offshore yuan strengthened past 7.14 per dollar on Thursday, marking its fifth consecutive session of gains, buoyed by a weakening greenback.

Hong Kong (HSI [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/HSI]) fell 0.76%, extending losses for the third session and hitting a one-week low amid declines in most sectors, notably consumers, tech, and financials.

Thailand’s industrial production dropped by 3.98% Y/Y in July.

Producer prices in Malaysia fell by 3.8%Y/Y in July.

India (SENSEX [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SENSEX]) traded 0.27% lower on Thursday, hitting their lowest level in two weeks as markets resumed after a local holiday on Wednesday. Traders grew increasingly concerned after Washington imposed an additional 25% duty on Indian goods in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, bringing total tariffs to 50%.

Australia (AS51 [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AS51]) gained 0.16%. Australia’s 10-year government bond yield edged down to 4.30% on Thursday, mirroring a decline in US bond yields. Private new capital expenditure on equipment, plant, and machinery in Australia expanded by 0.3% Q/Q in Q2.

Wall Street closed higher on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 notching a fresh intraday peak [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4489626-wall-street-dji-sp500-nasdaq] and record close at 6,481.38.

U.S. stock futures gained on Wednesday despite renewed concerns about the Federal Reserve’s independence: Dow +0.03%; S&P 500 +0.03%; Nasdaq +0.03%.
