Syria has exported its first official crude oil shipment in 14 years, following U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order in June to lift [https://www.state.gov/releases/office-of-the-spokesperson/2025/06/termination-of-syria-sanctions] sanctions on the Arab country.
The Syrian Oil Transport Company shipped 600,000 barrels of heavy crude from the Mediterranean port of Tartus, state-owned _Syrian Arab News Agency _reported, citing the company's general manager.
The shipment [https://sana.sy/economy/2277050/] contained surplus oil from Syria's major oil refineries in Baniyas and Homs, which are currently operating at their maximum production capacity.
More crude exports are expected to follow, as Syria works towards reviving its energy sector and expanding cooperation [https://seekingalpha.com/pr/20191769-syria-signs-14-billion-in-investment-deals-including-4-billion-airport-expansion] with international companies.
But a major hurdle for these efforts is Syria's oil infrastructure, which has been left debilitated by the nearly 14-year civil war that culminated with the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime last December.
Efforts are on to rebuild this infrastructure, with Syria signing deals with Saudi Arabian companies to boost cooperation in the electricity, oil and gas sectors. Syria also signed an $800M deal with Dubai-based logistics firm DP World for redeveloping the Tartus port.
According to S&P Global Commodity Insights, oil and gas revenues could be a major source of revenue for Syria to fund rebuilding efforts that may cost between $250B-$400B.
