Nucor slides after guiding Q3 earnings below consensus

Nucor (NYSE:NUE [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NUE]) shares fell over 5% in extended trading on Wednesday after the steelmaker issued earnings guidance for the third quarter below Wall Street consensus.

The company said it expects [https://seekingalpha.com/pr/20236329-nucor-announces-guidance-for-the-third-quarter-of-2025-earnings] third-quarter earnings to be in the range of $2.05 to $2.15 per diluted share. Analysts on average expect third-quarter earnings to be $2.56 on revenue of $8.37 billion.

Nucor reported net earnings of $2.60 per diluted share in the second quarter of 2025 and $1.05 per diluted share in the third quarter of 2024.

The Charlotte, North Carolina-based company said earnings in the third quarter are expected to decrease across all three of our operating segments as compared to the second quarter.

“The expected decrease in the steel mills segment earnings is primarily due to lower volumes coupled with margin compression. In the steel products segment, earnings are expected to decrease due to higher average costs per ton on stable average realized pricing and volumes,” it said, adding that the raw materials segment is expected to have lower earnings due to lower profitability in scrap processing operations.

The company said it has repurchased about 0.7 million shares at an average price of $140.46 per share during the third quarter. It plans to release its earnings after the markets close on October 27.
