Some of the rarest coins have sold for millions at major auctions, and according to Heritage Auctions, its August American Numismatic Association events alone brought in more than $68 million.

Even smaller sales can fetch impressive sums when collectors are chasing something special, as research from SD Bullion found. The study looked at eBay sales from March through May 2025 to see which gold and silver coins sold for in that period.

From British showpieces to American bullion tubes, these six coins all broke the $40,000 mark.

Last sold price: $210,077

Even though this tube of Gold Buffalos was made up of coins of mixed dates, it still went for over $68,000. For many buyers, a mixed tube offers the best of both worlds: secure investment and collectible interest.

Recognizable and backed by the U.S. Mint, the Eagle is one of the most trusted bullion coins worldwide, with this sale showing just how popular it is.

1797 $10 Large Eagle Draped Bust

Last sold price: $47,500

The sale of this classic American gold coin shows how history adds weight to value. It was graded AU55 by PCGS, which means “about uncirculated.” Coins at this level have only slight wear and still keep much of their original shine, and as most coins from the 1700s are worn down, finding one in this condition is rare.

Weighing just one-tenth of an ounce, this tiny coin’s value came from extreme rarity and collector demand. With a limited mintage and intricate design, it quickly became one of the most sought-after silver issues of recent years. The result shows that scarcity can outweigh precious metal content when it comes to price.
