Weekly ETF flows: Eight out of 11 sectors record outflows; bitcoin leads with higher inflows

The world's largest exchange-traded fund, SPDR S&P 500 Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SPY]), saw an outflow of $2.41 billion for the week ending August 15. However, the broader index tracking SPDR S&P 500 Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SPY]) gained 1.18% during the last week.

The bitcoin fund-Bitcoin ETF Flows iShares Bitcoin Trust Registered (IBIT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/IBIT]) registered an inflow of $1.13 billion last week. However, Bitcoin (BTC-USD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BTC-USD]) slipped 2.22% last week. Gold SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GLD]) saw an inflow of $621.39 million last week. However, GLD slipped 0.36% last week.

The 11 S&P 500 sector tracking ETFs, together, recorded a net outflow of about $3.98 billion last week, according to the data from etfdb.com.

Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/XLC]) led the outflow as eight out of 11 sectors saw money flowing out of their respective sector wise funds. The Communication Sector (XLC [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/XLC]) saw an outflow of $3.38 billion, followed by Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/XLV]) with $361.01 million flowing out last week. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/XLE]) saw an outflow of $279.32 million last week.

The highest inflow of funds last week was seen in the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/XLI]), with an inflow of $151.24 million, followed by the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/XLU]), which saw an inflow of $64.7 million. The Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/XLB]) saw an inflow of $32.3 million last week.
