Stock index futures tick up ahead of more earnings; government shutdown drags on

Stock index futures were higher on Monday, as Wall Street looked set to start November on a positive note.

S&P 500 futures (SPX [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SPX]) +0.2%, Nasdaq 100 futures (US100:IND [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/US100:IND]) +0.5% and Dow futures (INDU [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/INDU]) +0.1%.

Wall Street rallied higher on Friday after a back-and-forth session as investors digested upbeat earnings from big tech companies.

"One of this week’s major landmarks is that, by midnight tomorrow, the current U.S. government shutdown will officially become the longest in history—assuming there isn’t a highly unlikely near-term resolution," Deutsche Bank's Jim Reid said.

The U.S. government shutdown is now entering its 34th day, inching very close to the longest one, which lasted 35 days.

"If it weren’t for the shutdown, we’d be looking forward to the jobs report for October on Friday. But given we aren’t getting the government data releases, there’s likely to be outsize attention on the ADP’s report of private payrolls on Wednesday, especially in light of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s hawkish press conference last week," Reid added.

There will be more earnings [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4512329-earnings-week-ahead-amd-pltr-pfe-o-qcom-enb-shop-mcd-uber-smci-bp-lcid-mrna-abnb-wbd-dkng-amc-and-more] over the week for the investors to keep an eye on. Companies including Advanced Micro Devices (AMD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/AMD]), QUALCOMM (QCOM [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/QCOM]), Super Micro Computer (SMCI [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SMCI]), Palantir (PLTR [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/PLTR]), The Trade Desk (TTD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/TTD]), Pfizer (PFE [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/PFE]), Moderna (MRNA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MRNA]), McDonald’s (MCD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MCD]), Airbnb (ABNB [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ABNB]), and Uber (UBER [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/UBER]) among others, will report.

On the U.S.-China trade front, the former said it will suspend [https://seekingalpha.com/news/4512750-us-to-pause-port-fees-on-china-ships-next-week] port fees for a year on China-linked vessels starting Nov. 10, marking a step toward easing maritime tensions that had become a flashpoint in the trade war.

On the economic calendar, the PMI Manufacturing Final and the ISM Manufacturing Index will land during market hours. For the former, the consensus sees no revision from the flash at 52.2 in October and the latter is expected at 49.5 in October.

"The ISM manufacturing sentiment poll is due. Falling survey response rates and rising political polarization have conspired to reduce the reliability of survey-based evidence. The risk is that in the absence of proper economic data, investors turn in desperation to surveys and give them more credibility than they deserve," UBS' Paul Donovan said.
