Anthropic, the AI startup backed by Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), is making a big move into India. The company plans to open its first Indian office in Bengaluru in early 2026, marking its second base in Asia after Tokyo. CEO Dario Amodei is visiting the country this week to meet government officials and local partners as part of the expansion push.

India has become one of Anthropic's fastest-growing markets and now ranks as the second-largest user base for its Claude chatbot. The country's booming tech ecosystem, deep AI talent pool, and growing enterprise adoption are fueling that growth. Claude, known for its strong coding and reasoning abilities, is already available in India through both free and paid plans, though pricing in local currency hasn't been rolled out yet.
The expansion sets up a fresh AI face-off in India. OpenAI, backed by Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), registered its local entity earlier this year and plans to open a New Delhi office soon. They'll be competing with Google's Gemini and AI newcomer Perplexity, both of which have been offering advanced tools for free to Indian users.
Anthropic, valued at $183 billion after a $13 billion Series F round in September, also plans to triple its global workforce as demand for Claude surges worldwide.
