China's economy slows as industrial production, retail sales both miss targets; Jobless rate climbs to 5.2% in July

China's latest economic data indicates a slowdown, with key indicators missing forecasts. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION rose by 5.7% in July, a decrease from the 6.8% gain in June and below the expected 5.9%. Similarly, RETAIL SALES grew by 3.7%, a drop from June's 4.8% and well below the 4.6% consensus forecast. The country's SURVEYED UNEMPLOYMENT RATE also worsened, rising to 5.2% in July from 5% in June, exceeding market expectations.

On a monthly basis, retail activity fell by 0.14% in July 2025, easing from a revised 0.26% decline in the previous month. For the first seven months of the year, retail trade increased by 4.8% compared to the same period last year.

From January to July, the national urban surveyed unemployment rate averaged 5.2%, reflecting overall stability in the labor market.

Monthly, industrial output grew by 0.38%. For the 1st seven months of the year, industrial production rose by 6.3%.

CHINA’S FIXED-ASSET INVESTMENT increased by 1.6% year-on-year in January–July 2025 period, much less than market expectations of a 2.7% rise, compared to the 2.8% growth in the first six months.

CHINA’S NEW HOME PRICES in 70 cities dropped by 2.8% year-on-year in July 2025, easing from a 3.2% decline in the previous month. It was the 25th consecutive month of contraction, the softest pace since March 2024.

On Friday, the Shanghai Composite [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SHCOMP?source=section%3Asearch_bar%7Ccontent_type%3Aall%7Csection_asset%3Asearch-basic%7Csearch_item%3Ashcomp%7Crow_num%3A1%7CURL_first_level%3Anews%7Ctopic%3Asymbol] to around 3,670, while the Shenzhen Component climbed 0.7% to 11,530 on Friday, rebounding from the prior session’s losses despite a string of weaker-than-expected economic reports, and the offshore yuan [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/USD:CNY#source=url_first_level%3Amarket-news%7Csection%3Aglobal%7Csection_asset%3Afull_story%7Cbutton%3Abody_link] edged lower to around 7.18 per dollar on Friday, as investors weighed a batch of disappointing economic data.
