Zelenskyy courts Trump with $90B defense package for U.S. protection

Ukraine has committed to buying a package of U.S. weapons worth $90B as part of talks for security guarantees from the U.S., President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after his meeting in Washington, D.C.

Zelenskyy, along with other European leaders, met with President Donald Trump days after the latter met with Russia’s Vladimir Putin in Alaska, in the latest attempt by the U.S. to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

“There indeed is a package with our proposals worth $90B … And we have agreements with the US president that when our export opens, they will buy Ukrainian drones,” Zelenskyy told reporters.

A sale would be of interest to the top U.S. defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin (LMT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/LMT]), Raytheon Technologies (RTX [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/RTX]), Northrop Grumman (NOC [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/NOC]), General Dynamics (GD [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/GD]), L3Harris Technologies (LHX [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/LHX]), Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/HII]), Textron (TXT [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/TXT]), and Boeing (BA [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/BA]).

Trump too backed providing security guarantees to Ukraine if there is a peace deal with Russia – in a sense.

“During the meeting we discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, which guarantees would be provided by the various European countries, with a coordination with the [U.S.],” Trump said in a Truth Social post.

He also told reporters that “When it comes to security, there’s going to be a lot of help,” and that European countries would be a “first line of defense because they’re there. But we’ll help them out.”

Zelenskyy said that the details around security guarantees for Ukraine would likely be worked out within 10 days.
