"The purpose of what I'm doing is primarily to pay down debt, which will happen in very large quantity," President Trump said earlier this month. "But I think there's also a possibility that we're taking in so much money that we may very well make a dividend to the people of America."

To note, the U.S. is still running a monthly and annual deficit, and tariff revenue does not even come close to covering interest on the debt (as can be seen in the graphic below). However, tariffs have grown into the fourth-largest revenue source for the federal government, behind individual income taxes, social security & retirement, and corporate income taxes.

_WHAT'S NEXT? _"We had a substantial jump from July to August, and I think we’re going to see a bigger jump from August to September," Treasury Secretary Bessent told a White House Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. "I think we could be on our way well over half a trillion, maybe towards a trillion-dollar number [per year]. This administration, your administration, has made a meaningful dent in the budget deficit."
