How long will the government shutdown last? Prediction markets weigh in

The U.S. government has partially shut down after lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on federal funding. But how long with the shutdown last?

Kalshi is pricing in 9.5 days, with the odds [https://kalshi.com/markets/kxgovshutlength/days-of-government-shutdown] of the shutdown lasting more than 5 days at 81% and the odds for more than 10 days at 59%.

On Polymarket, the odds [https://polymarket.com/event/how-many-days-will-the-federal-government-be-shut-down-in-2025] for the shutdown lasting 10-29 days were at 44%, while 26% are betting on 4-9 days.

Russell Vought, head of the Office of Management and Budget, late on Tuesday said it's difficult to predict the duration of the shutdown.

The most recent federal shutdown was from December 22, 2018 to January 25, 2019 - the longest in U.S. history. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the shutdown had cost the American economy an estimated $11B [https://www.cbo.gov/publication/54937].
