The U.S. government shutdown has entered its 22nd day, making it the second-longest in history, as lawmakers remain deadlocked over expiring health-care subsidies.
With President Donald Trump set to depart for a trip to Asia later this week, congressional aides say there is a real risk the closure could extend into November, potentially surpassing the 35-day shutdown during Trump’s first term.
Prediction market Kalshi now sees the U.S. government shutdown lasting 41.5 days, up from 10.7 days on October 1, when the shutdown came into effect. According to Kalshi, the chances of the shutdown lasting more than 40 days was at 51%, while the odds of it stretching past 45 days stood at 37%.
A Tuesday White House meeting with Senate Republicans appeared to strengthen GOP resistance to negotiating with Democrats, who are demanding that 22 million Americans receive relief from rising health-care premiums as a condition for reopening the government.
“Our message has been very simple: We will not be extorted on this crazy plot of theirs,” Trump said.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries requested a meeting with Trump before his Asia trip, but the president said he would only meet after the shutdown ends.
The Senate needs at least eight Democratic votes to overcome a filibuster on the temporary spending bill passed by the House, which expires on Nov. 21. Senate Republican leader John Thune has pledged a floor vote on renewing expanded Affordable Care Act subsidies once the government reopens. Democrats, however, remain skeptical, arguing the plan would still leave Americans without timely relief. “The bottom line is that’s no deal, that’s a partisan plan that leaves the American people high and dry,” Schumer said.
The economic impact of the shutdown is set to worsen this week, as civilian federal workers—who received partial pay earlier—will miss their first full paycheck on Friday.
