Investing.com -- Air Canada flight attendants are defying a government order to return to work, threatening the airline’s plans to resume operations after a strike that began Saturday.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing 10,000 flight attendants at Canada’s largest airline, announced Sunday it would ask a Federal Court judge to block the government’s back-to-work order.

The union stated its members would remain on strike and invited Air Canada (TSX:AC) back to negotiations to "negotiate a fair deal."

The labor dispute erupted when approximately 10,500 flight attendants walked off the job Saturday after compensation negotiations between their union and the airline failed.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board directed Air Canada to resume operations and ordered all Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants to return to work by 2:00 p.m. in Montreal on Sunday.

The Montreal-based carrier had announced early Sunday that flights would gradually increase over the coming days, though it cautioned that operations would take several days to return to normal.

With flight attendants now refusing to comply with the return-to-work order, Air Canada’s plans to restart flights appear to be in jeopardy.
