Housing starts measure the initial construction of single-family and multi-family units on a monthly basis. Data on permits provide indications of future construction.

With housing stuck in the doldrums, the consensus sees housing starts down at a 1.290 million rate in July from 1.321 million in June. Permits are seen at 1.390 million in July versus 1.397 million in June.

E-commerce sales are sales of goods and services where an order is placed by the buyer or where price and terms of sale are negotiated over the Internet, an extranet, Electronic Data Interchange network, or other online system.
