Canadian energy infrastructure developer ATCO (OTCPK:ACLLF [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ACLLF]) said Friday it received approval [https://seekingalpha.com/pr/20209017-atco-subsidiary-canadian-utilities-granted-key-approval-on-multi-billion-dollar-pipeline] from the Alberta Utilities Commission on its needs assessment application for the Yellowhead pipeline project.

Yellowhead is expected to expand the capacity of Alberta's natural gas transmission system, spanning 230 km from the Peers area to Fort Saskatchewan to deliver more than 1.1B cf/day of natural gas, underpinning the province's economic and population growth.

The need assessment application is the first of two key regulatory filings that require approval from the AUC to advance the project; ATCO (OTCPK:ACLLF [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ACLLF]) said it plans to file a separate application later this year to seek AUC approval for construction of the infrastructure, which is expected to begin in 2026.
