Government shutdown length odds top 50 days for first time

The government shutdown is now expected to last at least 50 days, according to prediction markets.

Both Kalshi and Polymarket have odds favoring a shutdown lasting until Nov. 20, a week before Thanksgiving.

Concerns about holiday travel disruptions are growing after the FAA moved to cut traffic at 40 major U.S. airports. More than 1,000 were canceled on Saturday (JETS [https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/JETS]).

Digging further in to the odds, Kalshi posts a one in four chance than the shutdown lasts until Nov. 25, just two days before Turkey Day. But odds of it lasting the whole of November are down to 16%, well off late October highs above 30%.

Negotiations in Washington continued over the weekend. The Senate held a rare Saturday session but adjourned without a deal. Majority Leader John Thune said the chamber will keep meeting daily until the government reopens, with a vote possible Sunday on a GOP plan to attach a trio of long-term spending bills to the House-passed funding measure.
