Friday Sector Leaders: Materials, Energy

Looking at the sectors faring best as of midday Friday, shares of Materials companies are outperforming other sectors, up 1.8%. Within that group, Builders FirstSource Inc. (Symbol: BLDR) and Albemarle Corp. (Symbol: ALB) are two large stocks leading the way, showing a gain of 7.0% and 4.0%, respectively. Among the high volume ETFs, one ETF closely following materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLB), which is up 1.1% on the day, and up 9.07% year-to-date. Builders FirstSource Inc., meanwhile, is up 7.42% year-to-date, and Albemarle Corp., is down 36.90% year-to-date. ALB makes up approximately 1.0% of the underlying holdings of XLB.

The next best performing sector is the Energy sector, up 1.5%. Among large Energy stocks, Schlumberger Ltd (Symbol: SLB) and Devon Energy Corp. (Symbol: DVN) are the most notable, showing a gain of 2.4% and 2.3%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE), which is up 1.5% in midday trading, and up 9.53% on a year-to-date basis. Schlumberger Ltd, meanwhile, is down 12.12% year-to-date, and Devon Energy Corp. is up 0.34% year-to-date. Combined, SLB and DVN make up approximately 6.6% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
